Talk to any eye doctor, and they are going to recommend at least two pairs of glasses, while some may recommend three or four! When you come in for your eye exam, our opticians will tell you the same thing, so we wanted to take the time to explain why multiple pairs of glasses can prove to be essential.
1. You may break or lose your primary glasses.
Imagine this: You just sat on your only pair of glasses, and you can’t get to the eye doctor until next Thursday. What are you going to do!? Because we aren’t all magical like Harry Potter, it’s nice to have a back-up pair of glasses just in case you find yourself in a bind. Whether you lost your glasses, broke them, or they were stolen, having a backup pair will minimize the damage in this potential tragedy.
2. What happens when you run out of contacts!?
It happens to everyone – you thought you had a few more days, but you actually just used your last pair of contacts. You were SURE this day would never come, so your glasses are an old prescription from 1998, the year of Britney. Don’t try to bring Britney back… it’s not happening. Make sure you’ve updated your prescription and frame style for the day this happens!
It’s also a possibility that you could develop an eye condition that requires you to give your eyes a break from contacts for a few days. This could happen with infections like pink eye, abrasions, or even dry eyes, which are all very common! It’s nice to have a back-up pair of glasses just in case.
3. Glasses should be a gorgeous accessory to a great outfit!
Your frames should add to your look, not take away from it! As social media guru Dr. Tanya Gill says, your glasses are 90% of your selfie. We want your glasses to complete your outfit, not compete with it. There’s nothing worse than a pair of glasses that you need, but don’t want to wear because that bright frame you loved in the optical doesn’t match your sweater.
Your glasses are like a great handbag or even a pair of shoes – you ALWAYS need another! We like to suggest that everyone has at least one classic frame that goes with almost any outfit, and at least one frame that shows off your style! My most recent purchase? A clear, oversized square Oliver Peoples frame. It’s the total opposite of my all-black Prada’s, and a perfect addition to my collection!
4. You can choose different lenses for different activities.
One of the best features of the glasses you purchase at Coley & Coley is the Zeiss lenses. Depending on your daily activities, our opticians will recommend a lens that is perfect for your lifestyle, but you may find more than one lens type useful.
Do you spend a lot of time on the computer? You may enjoy the Zeiss digital lens with blue protect. This lens is made to help ease the eye strain that is caused by immediately switching from looking at a computer to looking far away, and vice versa.
Another great Zeiss lens is the Drive Safe lens. This lens makes it easier to drive in wet conditions and limited lighting. You may prefer to have one pair of glasses for the office and one pair for driving at night.
5. Your eyes need protection from the sun.
Lastly, it is crucial that you have a pair of sunglasses that block at least 99% of UVA and UVB rays. UV rays can cause macular degeneration, cataracts, and even skin cancer in and around the eyelids. Protecting those eyes from the sun is just as important as protecting your skin!
At Coley & Coley, you can turn any frame you like into sunglasses. Just ask an optician! You can also get your prescription put right into your sunglasses (AND you can get Drive Safe lenses… That’s like a double whammy!). So we definitely recommend at least one pair of good-quality sunglasses with your prescription for UV protection and safe driving conditions.
Now when you hear from an eye doctor that you need multiple pairs of glasses, you know they aren’t just trying to upsell you! It’s truly important to have your backup glasses (and even a backup to your backup if you’re especially clumsy).
